History of Grama Panchayat

The beginnings of today's Ajanur Grama Panchayat trace back six decades ago when the administration of Ajanur village, then part of the South Canara district in Madras State, was overseen by the South Canara District Board. Local governance officially commenced at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 19, 1937, when twelve members took their oaths of office before South Canara DPO Balakrishnan at the Ajanur Panchayat Court building. Shankar Rao was chosen as the President and B. Madhava Prabhu as the Vice President. The foundation of the panchayat's current substantial funds began on May 24, 1937, with an initial sum of ten rupees provided by Vice President B. Madhava Prabhu. Composed of prominent local figures, the board initially relied on financial aid from the District Board, donations from local dignitaries, and taxes and fees collected by the President for its revenue. Its very first expenditure was a single rupee, which was used to buy postal stamps. Leadership transitioned on April 10, 1938, when P. Krishnan Nair assumed the office of President, serving continuously until 1957. Following the formation of Kerala State, K. Kunjambu took charge as the Panchayat Board President after the 1957 elections.
